A blank Sudoku grid is useful for creating your own puzzles, practising solving techniques with pencil and paper, teaching Sudoku to beginners, or testing custom puzzles before publication. Our generator creates clean, printable grids in any paper size with adjustable cell dimensions.
What you can do with a blank grid
Create custom puzzles: Start from a solution and remove cells systematically, testing after each removal to ensure the puzzle retains a unique solution.
Practice solving techniques: Copy a puzzle from a book or website onto a blank grid where you have full notation space.
Teach Sudoku: Use blank grids in a classroom for hands-on demonstrations and group solving exercises.
Solution tracking: Print a blank grid alongside a puzzle for marking solutions or testing alternative solving paths.
Sudoku design: Test new variants (Diagonal Sudoku, Killer Sudoku) on blank grids before formal puzzle generation.
Grid dimensions
A standard 9×9 Sudoku grid contains 81 cells arranged as nine 3×3 boxes. Each cell is typically 6–8mm for comfortable solving, expanding to 10–12mm for Large Print Sudoku. Our generator allows cell sizes from 4mm to 20mm to suit any paper size and notation preference.
The Mini Sudoku grid (4×4) contains 16 cells arranged as four 2×2 boxes. It is used for entry-level puzzles and quick solving sessions.
Paper size guidance
A4 (210×297mm): Comfortably fits 6 standard Sudoku grids or 1–2 Large Print grids per page.
US Letter (8.5×11 in): Comfortably fits 6 standard grids or 1–2 Large Print grids per page.
Legal (8.5×14 in): Fits 8 standard grids or 2–3 Large Print grids per page — ideal for puzzle books.
Tabloid / A3: Suitable for classroom display or large-format puzzle books with 12+ grids per page.
Pencil notation conventions
When using a blank grid for solving, most experienced solvers use pencil notation to track candidates. The standard convention is to mark candidates in the corners of each cell in a 3×3 mini-grid pattern: candidate 1 top-left, candidate 5 centre, candidate 9 bottom-right. This makes candidate elimination visually trackable.
Tips for using printable grids
- Print at 100% scale — never 'fit to page' — to preserve exact cell dimensions.
- Use a soft 2B pencil for candidate notation; it erases cleanly without paper damage.
- For long solving sessions, print multiple blank grids so you can restart without re-printing.
- If teaching Sudoku, print blank grids alongside the puzzle so students have notation space.
FAQ
Printable Sudoku Grid — Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I print a blank Sudoku grid?
Use the blank grid generator on this page. Choose 9×9 or 4×4, set the paper size and cell size, and download a print-ready PDF for free.
What size should a printed Sudoku grid be?
8–10 mm cells suit most solvers on A4 or US Letter. Use 10 mm or larger for large-print grids and comfortable pencil work.
Can I print an empty Sudoku grid to fill in by hand?
Yes. The blank grid mode hides all given numbers and outputs an empty grid, which is useful for teaching, copying puzzles by hand, and constructing your own.
